When wool absorbs moisture, it undergoes a series of chemical reactions that release heat into the environment and the fabric itself stays warm, allowing the body to adapt to temperature fluctuations. Moisture evaporates from wool quite slowly: the top layer of wool (cuticle) is made up of tiny micropores that allow the fabric to breathe - the pores are so tiny that water, in the form of droplets, cannot penetrate the surface of the fabric, and so the moisture only escapes through the top pores, while preventing water from penetrating the fabric. The human body regulates body temperature by increasing surface circulation and, if necessary, by sweating, so the unique ability of wool to let air and water vapour pass through leaves a feeling of comfort.
